Meet the teams: Group A – Portugal

A Portuguese U18 squad are a hard-working group and very ambitious, they have high expectations about this European Championship because it will the first time they have reached the final stage, they are hoping to gain experience through this participation. They have taken part in international tournaments, in Portugal, the first one being the Carnival Tournament with Romania, Spain, Tunisia, which they have won, as well as the 4 Nations Cup, with Hungary, Italy and Romania, which they have also won and before the European Championship they will play Scandibérico Tournament with Sweden, Norway and Spain, taking place in August. Three key players who will lead the team at the Championship are Salvador Salvador (left back), Martim Costa (centre back) and Gonçalo Nogueira (right back).  

Nuno Santos, head coach is hoping to lay the foundations for the future of handball in Portugal: “We will give our best, it will be the first big event for this generation, but we are determined to achieve a positive outcome and to strengthen this generation which is very important for the future of Portuguese handball.”

Player Salvador Salvador underlined team’s motivation: “There aren’t any impossibles and we keep on dreaming, therefore our expectations are high, we will give everything we got in this European Championship because we have been waiting for it for a while now.”
