Iceland wins in a rough match against Slovenia

First match of the third round of M18 European Handball Championship played in Varaždin Arena was filled with excitement and rough play.

Iceland quickly took the lead and with time got too far away for Slovenia to catch them. First half of Slovenia Iceland match ended with overwhelming 14 to 8 for Iceland. During the game, two red cards were given, one to Tyr Tjorvi Gislason from Iceland team and one to Lan Grbic from Slovenia.

Slovenia started strong in the second half and managed to get closer to Iceland but in spite of all of their struggle and stronger play, Iceland ended winning the match 24:28.

Best Slovenian player of the match, who was also the top scorer for Slovenia was Tadej Kljun with five scored goals. Best Iceland player was Haukur Thrastarson who also scored the most goals for Iceland and the most goals in the game, twelve.

“We knew it would be a hard game, but we were hoping that we could win. In the end, it’s +4 for Iceland, they were better straight from the beginning and deserved first place in Group D” said Kljun Tadej, best Slovenian player of the match.

“My team wanted this win and ran into the game with passion, but Iceland were far better team today. Their goalkeeper was great in the first half and that was the key for easy win” added Sloveinan coach Klemenčić Janez.
“We had great defence in the first half and we won the game in the first half” commented Thrastarson Haukur from Iceland.
We knew before this game that it was OK for us to lose by 5 or 6 goals, but we played very strong in the first half and secured nice goal difference to let everybody from the bench to take some minutes” noted Rikardsson Heimir coach of Iceland national team.
